Key Phases of the Procedure

- Flap Design and Harvest: Precise surgical technique is required to safely harvest the designated tissue flap, ensuring the viability of its vascular pedicle.
- Defect Preparation: Meticulous preparation of the recipient vessel bed to ensure it can support revascularization of the transferred tissue.
- Microvascular Anastomosis: This is the most technically demanding step, requiring perfect suturing of the arteries and veins under a microscope to restore blood flow.
Challenges and Critical Factors
A major surgical challenge involves the defect around the head and neck region. Large-scale resections create defects that traditional, non-vascularized flaps cannot resolve. This inability to reconstruct often limits a surgeon's ability to offer potentially curative treatments.
